Day Three: French Quarter and Ogden Museum of Southern Art

The third day found NJ and Kathie running the streets in the French Quarter. The heart of the French Quarter is the grand Saint Louis Cathedral, flanked by the historic Cabildo and Presbytere (now museums) and facing Jackson Square. The  Pontalba buildings enclose the square on either side of the park. Artists display their wares on the fence surrounding the park.

There isn't a photo, but lunch was a hot dog and diet Coke from a Lucky Dog cart in front of the cathedral. You can see a photo of a Lucky Dog cart here.

Part of the joy of the French Quarter is just running the streets and taking in the energy and atmosphere.
The Dutch Alley Artist's Co-op is at the head of Dutchman's Alley, between Dumaine and the river. Lots of beautiful arts and crafts, many by local artists, can be found here.
Music lured us farther into Dutch Alley. We lucked upon a performance by the musical rangers of the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park.
After a quick stop across the street at the Central Grocery to get the original muffulatta. To learn about this uniquely New Orleans delicaty, click here. One muffulatta easily fed four of us. The fourth was Cousin Gloria.

From Gloria's, we headed back downtown to a musical evening at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. The museum stays open after hours from time to time and provides live music in the foyer. Unfortunately, the music was done in by the architecture, which made if difficult to listen to. Our little group headed upstairs and had a nice tour of the art on display. The Ogden has some lovely examples of outsider art that really caught our attention.

We parked across the street, under the mural painted on the Contemporary Arts building. The CA didn't get into our schedule -- next time!
